Our little group has agreed that our next reading selection will be Everlasting Man.  John Rose has kindly broken the book up into manageable, discussion-friendly chunks, which should be laid out in the PDF below.

Our schedule remains the same: Second Monday, 7 PM, Mimi’s Cafe in San Jose.

An RSVP to bay-area-chesterton-society@googlegroups.com would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings Chestertonians!

We are currently working our way through “In Defense of Sanity,” which is a fairly recent anthology of essays spanning most of Chesterton’s writing career.  October readings are as follows: On GargoylesThe Fading Fireworks and The Furrows.  I’m not looking at the book at the moment, so depending on the length and “meat” of these essays, it’s possible we’ll only get through two.

We will be testing out a new location for a month or two to see how it works for people.

18. A Much Repeated Repetition (Daily News, March 26, 1904)

As to location: I’m trying to get a larger space for our monthly meetings, and haven’t quite caught the correct manager on the phone yet.  So as of now, Friday night, we’re meeting at Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale, corner of Fremont and Mary.  Hopefully we’ll be in bigger digs for November.
Please reply back to the email list (preferable) or in the combox below (also okay) for headcount purposes.  I’m not sure if we should be expecting more than the Usual Suspects in the aftermath of the “Evening with GKC.”
If there are any last minute issues, my cell phone is 408-772-6185.

Greetings Chestertonians!

I hope this finds you enjoying a restful summer! Hopefully you have time in your (more relaxed) schedule for an evening of conversation and conviviality.

PLEASE NOTE that we are meeting, this month only, on the FIRST MONDAY, August 3, at 7 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale. This schedule tweak accommodates several attendees with conflicts on the normal date. We are currently working our way through “In Defense of Sanity,” which is a fairly recent anthology of essays spanning most of Chesterton’s writing career. The August readings will be 13. The Mad Official and 14. The Mystagogue (both from A Miscellany of Men, 1912). While these are all available in a variety of free formats online, and people are welcome to use them, the physical book does present the advantage of everyone literally being “on the same page” when someone wants to discuss a particular passage.

Since these are both unusually short pieces, the group decided last month to add a third reading in the form of a selection from The Everlasting Man. So in addition to the two short essays, we will be discussing the chapter entitled “The Five Deaths of the Faith.” Again, there are numerous free sources for this reading online, including here.

Please drop a quick line here or back to the list if you plan to be at The County Gourmet Monday night at 7. The address is 1314 S Mary Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94087, at the corner of Fremont and Mary. My cell phone in case of any last-minute issues is (408) 772-6185. Hope to see you there!

PS Hopefully everyone has already gotten a short email blast about the upcoming performance at Our Lady of Peace on October 2nd.  We can start discussing some of the nitty-gritty details at the meeting.  Please aim to be arrive as close to 7 as possible so we have time to catch up, discuss the readings and discuss some of these practical matters.

Greetings, Bay Area Chestertonians!

After a few months’ hiatus, we are attempting to revive the Bay Area Chesterton Society! We will meet up this first Wednesday of the month, May 7th, at 7:00 PM at Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale.  We will be reading and discussing the ninth and tenth selections from G. K. Chesterton’s collection of essays Tremendous TriflesIn the Place de La Bastille and On Lying in Bed.

New members are always welcome.  Please leave a quick comment in the box if you might come so we get a large enough table.  Reading the selection ahead of time, and bringing a copy with you are helpful, but not required.

Attendees are asked to contribute $1 in monthly dues, which are being saved to bring in a speaker.  If you’ve never eaten at Country Gourmet before, be aware that you place your order up at the front counter, and the staff will bring your food to your table.  So please step up and order upon arrival, then come on over to the table.

If you’re feeling especially ambitious, bring along your favorite Chesterton quote or passage to share!

Please join us!  We’d love to meet you!
