With apologies for the late posting, yes there IS a meetup tomorrow night!
From “In Defense of Sanity”
19. The Maxims of Maxim (Daily News, February 25, 1905)
20. The Book of Job (GKC as MC, 1929)
From Part I of “Everlasting Man”
V Man and Mythologies, pp.101-115 (Ignatius ed.)
For now the location continues to be the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale, at the corner of Mary and Fremont.  If anyone felt particularly ambitious in the future, please ping me about what kind of leg work we could do to secure a different meeting site that might offer a little more space for boisterous discussion…  :)
Please reply back to the list for headcount purposes.  If you’re not certain how/where to reply to the list (or if you are on the list yet) hopefully this link will help you out…
With baby due imminently I do not expect to be at the next few meetings.  John Rose has kindly offered to moderate the discussions.  Thank you!  If you also start seeing reminder emails from some new, suspicious character, do not be suspicious– this would merely indicate I’ve managed to foist communications duties off onto some other poor, unsuspecting soul.
Best regards,
Margaret

Greetings Chestertonians!

We are currently working our way through “In Defense of Sanity,” which is a fairly recent anthology of essays spanning most of Chesterton’s writing career.  October readings are as follows:

From “In Defense of Sanity”
17. The Mystery of the Mystics (Daily News, August 30, 1901)
18. A Much Repeated Repetition (Daily News, March 26, 1904)
From Part I of “Everlasting Man”
V Man and Mythologies, pp.101-115 (Ignatius ed.) freely available online here and here.
If you aren’t currently receiving our emails, please join our list to stay informed of upcoming meetings and events by going here.  You can also like our Facebook page and see updates there.
As to location: I’m trying to get a larger space for our monthly meetings, and haven’t quite caught the correct manager on the phone yet.  So as of now, Friday night, we’re meeting at Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale, corner of Fremont and Mary.  Hopefully we’ll be in bigger digs for November.
Please reply back to the email list (preferable) or in the combox below (also okay) for headcount purposes.  I’m not sure if we should be expecting more than the Usual Suspects in the aftermath of the “Evening with GKC.”
If there are any last minute issues, my cell phone is 408-772-6185.

Greetings Chestertonians!

I hope this finds you enjoying a restful summer! Hopefully you have time in your (more relaxed) schedule for an evening of conversation and conviviality.

PLEASE NOTE that we are meeting, this month only, on the FIRST MONDAY, August 3, at 7 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale. This schedule tweak accommodates several attendees with conflicts on the normal date. We are currently working our way through “In Defense of Sanity,” which is a fairly recent anthology of essays spanning most of Chesterton’s writing career. The August readings will be 13. The Mad Official and 14. The Mystagogue (both from A Miscellany of Men, 1912). While these are all available in a variety of free formats online, and people are welcome to use them, the physical book does present the advantage of everyone literally being “on the same page” when someone wants to discuss a particular passage.

Since these are both unusually short pieces, the group decided last month to add a third reading in the form of a selection from The Everlasting Man. So in addition to the two short essays, we will be discussing the chapter entitled “The Five Deaths of the Faith.” Again, there are numerous free sources for this reading online, including here.

Please drop a quick line here or back to the list if you plan to be at The County Gourmet Monday night at 7. The address is 1314 S Mary Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94087, at the corner of Fremont and Mary. My cell phone in case of any last-minute issues is (408) 772-6185. Hope to see you there!

PS Hopefully everyone has already gotten a short email blast about the upcoming performance at Our Lady of Peace on October 2nd.  We can start discussing some of the nitty-gritty details at the meeting.  Please aim to be arrive as close to 7 as possible so we have time to catch up, discuss the readings and discuss some of these practical matters.

Greetings Chestertonians!

I hope this finds you enjoying a restful summer! Hopefully you have time in your (more relaxed) schedule for an evening of conversation and conviviality.

As usual, we’ll be meeting on the second Monday of the month, 7 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale. We are currently working our way through “In Defense of Sanity,” which is a fairly recent anthology of essays spanning most of Chesterton’s writing career. The July readings will be Chapter 11. The Shop of Ghosts (Tremendous Trifles, 1909) and Chapter 12. The Romantic in the Rain (A Miscellany of Men, 1912) While these are all available in a variety of free formats online, and people are welcome to use them, the physical book does present the advantage of everyone literally being “on the same page” when someone wants to discuss a particular passage.

April 13 2015 Meeting

Hello Chestertonians!

Don’t forget that there have been a few recent changes–

  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like GKC’s literary criticism, etc
For April, we’ll be discussing essays 7 & 8, What I Found in My Pocket and On Lying in Bed.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation.

Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward this email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum, share on Facebook.

 See you April 13!

March 9 2015 Meeting

Hello Chestertonians!
Don’t forget that there have been a few recent changes–
  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like GKC’s literary criticism, etc…
For March, we’ll be discussing the fifth and sixth essays from In Defense of Sanity. These essays are entitled A Piece of Chalk and What I Found in My Pocket.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation.  We will also briefly dip our toes into the waters of Distributism, with this introductory essay in a series from the online journal Ethika Politika.  IF this proves to be a sufficient interest to attendees, we may work our way through the series over the next several months.  Please bring a paper or electronic copy of the essay to the meeting if you can.
Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward this email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum, share on Facebook.
See you March 9!
