April 13 2015 Meeting

Hello Chestertonians!

Don’t forget that there have been a few recent changes–

  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like GKC’s literary criticism, etc
For April, we’ll be discussing essays 7 & 8, What I Found in My Pocket and On Lying in Bed.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation.

Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward this email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum, share on Facebook.

 See you April 13!

March 9 2015 Meeting

Hello Chestertonians!
Don’t forget that there have been a few recent changes–
  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like GKC’s literary criticism, etc…
For March, we’ll be discussing the fifth and sixth essays from In Defense of Sanity. These essays are entitled A Piece of Chalk and What I Found in My Pocket.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation.  We will also briefly dip our toes into the waters of Distributism, with this introductory essay in a series from the online journal Ethika Politika.  IF this proves to be a sufficient interest to attendees, we may work our way through the series over the next several months.  Please bring a paper or electronic copy of the essay to the meeting if you can.
Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward this email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum, share on Facebook.
See you March 9!

February 9 2015 Meeting

Hello Chestertonians!
Don’t forget that there have been a few recent changes–
  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like Distributism or GKC’s literary criticism, etc…
For February, we’ll be discussing the third and fourth essays from In Defense of Sanity.  These essays are entitled On Certain Modern Writers and the Institution of the Family and On Running After One’s Hat.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation.  Please bring along your thoughts and suggestions for additional reading for March– is there a particular book you’d like to read?  A topic you’d like to examine in greater depth?  I’ve found an interesting-looking essay series on Distributism, so I’ll bring along a few copies of the first installment to see what people think.
Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward this email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum, share on Facebook.
See you February 9!

Hello Chestertonians!

A few decisions were made at the December meeting.  Briefly:

  • Meetings will be held the second Monday of each month, 7-9 PM, at the Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale
  • Our “basic” book for the foreseeable future will be In Defense of Sanity
  • Typical reading will include one or more essays from In Defense of Sanity, plus additional materials– a book of particular interest, articles on specific topics like Distributism or GKC’s literary criticism, etc…

For January, we’ll be discussing the first two essays from In Defense of Sanity.  Physical paper copies of the book are strongly encouraged so we can literally all be “on the same page,” as this greatly facilitates the conversation. Please bring along your thoughts and suggestions for additional reading for February– is there a particular book you’d like to read?  A topic you’d like to examine in greater depth?

Finally, please help us spread the word about our little group.  Invite a friend, forward an email to a few acquaintances, put a posting up on a community forum.

See you January 12!  Merry Christmas to all!

Greetings Chesterton lovers!

We will meet up the first Wednesday of the month, December 3, at 7:00 PM at Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale.  We will be reading and discussing the Father Brown mystery, “The Flying Stars.”  Numerous sites have the story available, including a PDF file here.

Please come prepared to share a brief “book report” or proposal or whatever on what YOU would like to be the upcoming reading for the group.  Specific edition information, pricing, availability, etc would be helpful.
Gather your thoughts on the possibility of moving meetings to MONDAYS starting in the new year.

New members are always welcome.  Please leave a quick comment in the box if you might come so we get a large enough table.

If you’ve never eaten at Country Gourmet before, be aware that you place your order up at the front counter, and the staff will bring your food to your table.  So step up and order upon arrival, then come on over to the table!

Readings, time and location remain the same. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

The planned reading for the Bay Area Chesterton Society for the next several months will be Maisie Ward’s excellent biography, Gilbert Keith Chesterton.  In light of the opening of GKC’s cause, there was interest among the members in learning more details of his life.

We will meet up the first Wednesday of the month, August 6, at 7:00 PM at Country Gourmet in Sunnyvale.  We will be reading and discussing chapters 13-17 of  the biography.

New members are always welcome.  Please leave a quick comment in the box if you might come so we get a large enough table.

Attendees are asked to contribute $1 in monthly dues, which are being saved to bring in a speaker.  If you’ve never eaten at Country Gourmet before, be aware that you place your order up at the front counter, and the staff will bring your food to your table.  So please step up and order upon arrival, then come on over to the table.

Hope to see you August 6!
